A new Attorney General and a new legal system?

Articles, Procedure + Litigation

The recently appointed NSW Attorney General Gabrielle Upton is seeking to harmonise and further regulate the legal profession.

In order to achieve these goals Ms Upton is persuading all states to follow in NSW and Victoria’s footsteps in adopting the Uniform Legal Profession Regulations. It is believed that upon national adoption of these regulations Australia will have a legal system that is more efficient which would help to instill further confidence in the profession. Ms Upton stated:

“I’m hoping we will be able to get them on board, so that the profession can spend more time being lawyers rather than worrying about rules that are not uniform around trust accounts, payments, memberships to professional bodies…”

Further to this the Attorney General seeks to increase the use of technology in all proceedings, with the aim once again to increase efficiency and fairness.

Whilst Ms Upton recognises that there are significant budget restraints she is certainly attacking the situation from all possible angles.
