May Madness: A record breaking number of ATO wind-ups in May 2015

In 2013 the ATO published a fact sheet ‘Firmer action approach to debt collectionhowever, until last month the ATO’s actions have not matched their words. In a bid to reinforce their newly found tough stance on insolvency the Commissioner of Taxation, Mr Chris Jordan recently gave a speech entitled ‘Reinventing the ATO’, which we informed readers of  earlier in May.

In May 2015 the ATO filed 556 winding-up applications against taxpayers who had not met their obligations to the ATO.  This is 77% of all winding up applications for the month of May and is the highest number of winding-ups filed by the ATO since July 2012.

The ATO’s annual report for the year to 30 June, 2014 shows that since 2009/2010 the ATO have filed on average 1103 winding-up applications per year.  This is about 92 applications each month.  This figure was reached in the first 2 days of May 2015.
